Week 10 of 2017 52 week project: Barred Owl
Had a house full of people and it has been raining a lot lately so not a lot of time to get my photo of the week in. I was playing golf last weekend when a couple firetrucks went by the course with the sirens blasting. I heard a pair of Barred Owls answer back to the sirens. Game on! Local owls 5 miles from my house. I headed out at first light this morning to find them and it was SO foggy! Wasn’t really worried about the lighting I wanted to find their den tree. Five minutes into the search and I had them both calling to me. Didn’t find the den tree yet, but now it just a matter of some more field time.

I really enjoy my last trip to Zanjero Park for Burrowing Owls in Phoenix last June. So when I had to go back to Phoenix this January I made sure to take some camera gear. I was hoping for Babies / Owlets this time, but no luck. One of the locals said the owlets come out in late July. This year’s offerings.

I was asked to go out to my company’s development center in Phoenix Arizona. It has been raining so much in Texas I haven’t been out in the field doing my wildlife photography. I decided to go ahead and pack a camera and a small zoom lens. I had heard that there were Burrowing Owls in Gilbert. Sure enough they have made a park for the Owls. As the cities around Phoenix build out new subdivision, then relocate the Burrowing Owl families to Zanjero Park. Volunteers have build 100 man made Owl burrows.
There was at least 4 or 5 active owls while I was there. I was a little surprised as it was 117 degrees while I was there. I took my Cannon 5D MK III and my 100-400mm MKII. As soon as the Owls started flying around I really wished I would have brought my trusty 1DX, but I made do with what I had.

Is this one guarding a pile of Dog Pooh?
Was finally able to catch one in flight, the Batman pose no less.
I don’t like man made objects in my nature and wildlife photos but I wanted to post a few of the habitat that built for the owls.

Each Burrow is numbered. This owl lived in #35, but liked to hang out on the #47 / #48 perch. The first 60 burrows are along a wide cement pathway. The rest are out in more of a gravel path. Hope you found this little review worth your time.
If I get time while I am out here, I am going to look for the Wild Horses of the Salt River.

Heard the Barred Owl at White Rock Lake owlets were fledging. So I finally got over there to photograph them. Two of the three were already fledge and only one left in the den tree.
Both parents were also very active.

Bonus pair of Wood Ducks in some backwater.
